Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

In the last week, a new study has shown that the drugs that most people need to get to work are much more likely to cause heart disease than the ones they can take. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that for men who want to try to take Viagra, the drug doesn’t work much. For some, it works, for others it doesn’t, and still others, like men who have health problems that cause erections but don’t necessarily need to be in the first place. But that doesn’t mean that men who don’t want to take the drugs all the time can do so. They can take them only if they want to. “There is a long-term effect for men who want to try to take drugs,” says study researcher Dr. David F. Ricks, a professor of family medicine at Harvard Medical School.
The study is based on an earlier research study in which more than 10,000 men who had heart disease were asked to take Viagra once a day. After taking the drug for two years, they found that those who took Viagra had higher rates of heart disease than those who didn’t. But the researchers didn’t know for sure that it was the Viagra that caused the higher rates.
But they did know that there was a strong link between the drugs. A study of men with erectile dysfunction found that men who took the drugs were less likely to have heart disease as a result of the drugs. But it did not know if they were also at risk of having a heart attack or if they also had other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high blood sugar, high levels of fat, high blood pressure, high levels of potassium, diabetes, high levels of alcohol, high levels of salt, high levels of caffeine, high levels of cholesterol, a family history of heart disease, and having high blood sugar.

D., an associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and chief executive officer of Men’s Health, says that if you take drugs for a long time, and you think that they’re working, you can see a difference in the symptoms of heart disease in the men who take the drugs. “It’s not as if they just take a pill,” he says. “The men who take drugs are taking the drugs for a long time, and they can take them for a long time, and then there’s the problem of getting your blood going up to your lungs.”
Ladd says that the drugs that are most likely to cause heart disease include nitrates, which is a type of medicine that lowers blood pressure. And that is one of the reasons that it’s so expensive. “The heart disease that we’re seeing is the result of a lot of people being under stress, and they’re not always able to get to the heart of the place they were before,” he says. “The people who are going to be prescribed the drugs, and the men who are going to be prescribed the drugs, it’s not necessarily the men who are having a heart attack or a heart valve problem.
